  • Tuesday 6.00 pm, interval session with AndyAlice and Rowan outside Freyberg Pool. This week’s session is a very casual run around the waterfront before heading to the Brewbar for a well-deserved beverage and/or food to celebrate the end of another winter of Tuesday Night Sessions.
  • Friday 12.27 pm, Kupe Run, a chatty pre-weekend run from the Kupe statue on the waterfront.
  • Saturday 8.00 am, Parkruns at WaitangiLower HuttAra HarakekeTrenthamKāpiti and Greytown.
  • Saturday 8.30 am, speed sessions at Karori Park. Contact our club captains, Emma and Bert, or check Facebook for details.
  • Saturday 2.00 pm, friendly club pack runs, Mt Cook Clubrooms, Salisbury Terrace.
  • Sunday long pack runs — usually, these leave at 8.30 am from outside Freyberg Pool and some alternative locations around Wellington. Contact our club captains, Emma and Bert, or check Facebook for details.

NZ Road Relay Championships

Wellington Scottish tied with WHAC for third equal in the club of the year competition behind Whippets and Don Grieg Racing Stables.

The W50s won their grade and are national champions again, with five of the six of them running fastest lap and Karyn McLean winning the baton. The senior men’s A team was 9th, led by a strong opening leg from Seamus Kane (baton winner). The B team was 3rd in the C Grade, and Malcolm Kerr won the baton. The senior women were also 9th, and Megan Strickett won the baton. The M35s were 4th, and Tim Hodge won the baton. The M50s were 2nd, and Ed Whiting won the baton. The W35s were 3rd, and Floor Kaars Sipjstein ran a fastest lap to win the baton. The O60s A team just missed the podium by 10 seconds after the baton winner, Don Stevens, ran a strong lap to set up a tight finish. The O60s B were 8th, with John Gardiner winning the baton. The Composite B team was 5th in the community grade, with Lawrence Gao winning the baton, and the A team was 13th, with Marianne Elliot winning the team baton.

New Night of Miles organiser wanted

Andy Ford is stepping down from his role organising the Night of Miles track race, which takes place before Christmas each year. Does anyone want to take on this role? It is one of the most fun track events of the year. The organiser needs to be skilled at lolly scrambles, encouraging fun and getting Santa Claus to the start line in shape to race. Contact Andy for details.

Strong mums: Strength class for mums who want to run!

Sierra Ryland’s next 8-week block starts on Thursday 12 October. She only has 4 spots left. This class is kept small so she can give each person some 1-1 attention.

This class will help you:

  • stay strong and run for years to come
  • improve back and knee pain
  • run without leaking
  • give you confidence in your running

Sierra will be offering limited $10 trial spots for the first class. Here are the details for the trial class:

  • St Ninian’s Church (front room)
  • Thur 12 October at 7pm-7:45pm
  • BYO mat, towel and drink bottle

Sierra would love for you to come and try the class. There is no obligation to continue if you decide it isn’t for you.

Bernie Portenski Memorial Trophy, 14 October

The Bernie Portenski Memorial Cup is a handicapped race to celebrate the end of the harrier season and to commemorate Bernie Portenski. It starts in Titahi Bay and races around Whitireia Park along roads, trails and sand beaches.

Hinano needs 5 or 6 marshalls for the race. Please contact her if you can help. Also, remember to bring a plate of food to share for afternoon tea.

Wairarapa Half Marathon, 14km and 7km, 15 October

Run or walk 1, 2, or 3 laps of a picturesque 7 km course alongside the Waipoua River and Henley Lake in Masterton.

McVilly Shield Relay, 28 October

This year, it is at the end of the season instead of the start. But it’s still at Karori Park. We’ll keep the same format with random handicaps, and the winners gets to take home a very large trophy.

Newtown Park hosts the most popular set of 10,000m races in New Zealand. For the last five years, this has been a night of PBs for athletes of all speeds — 40 percent of athletes finished with a new best time.
