Running and Walking in Wellington, New Zealand

Lifestyle Sports Night of Miles

Details for 2024 are not available yet, but here are details for 2023.

Saturday 16 December 2023, Newtown Park

The LIFESTYLE SPORTS Scottish Night of Miles is an annual event organised by Wellington Scottish Athletics Club.

This is a unique event full of Christmas fun, and features races over the rarely run distance of one mile.

Each year we collect donations from athletes and spectators, then hand them on to a local Wellington charity. This year’s charity is the Porirua chapter of Trailblazers. For the competitive events in the programme where pre-entry is required, we have set a $10 entry fee that will be part of the donations to Trailblazers.

We are also grateful to our event sponsor, Lifestyle Sports, who are a long-standing supporter of Scottish Athletics and one of the premier retailers of running kit within the region.

The programme consists of a mix of children’s, senior and fun social events. There are several different mile races including elite men’s and women’s races and an all-comers mile that anyone can participate in (including Father Christmas). Subject to interest, some field events may be added to the programme.

The programme includes fun events:

  • a Mile race against Santa – the real Santa!
  • a Mile relay – teams of 4, each athlete running 400m (and a bit) to provide some fun at the end of the evening, prizes to any team that breaks the magical 4-minute mile!

The provisional programme is outlined below.

Anyone wanting to compete in the Kids Chocolate Fish Dash, the All-Comers Social Mile (against Father Christmas), the Mile relay or any of the sprints can enter on the day.  However, for the Sprints and Field events, you still need a Competitor number. Please read the sections below.

Mile races: To take part in one of the three seeded races below, please enter in advance – by 6pm on Friday 15 December.  All registered athletes should log in and then proceed to register from that point.

  • 1 Mile Race-Walk
  • 1 Mile Run Women (races will be multiple grades together, in seeded heats)
  • 1 Mile Run Men (races will be multiple grades together, in seeded heats)

For the 1 Mile run events, you will be asked to enter a seed time.  Please enter a realistic estimate of your time to run 1609m (note this is 7% longer distance than a 1500m – so as an example, a person who can run 1500m in 5:30, a seed time for the Mile could be 5:53).  When entering your seed time, please follow this format exactly: MM:SS.00.  An example would be 05:53.00  NB: you don’t need to enter the colon or dot – just enter the numbers  (the screen shows an abbreviation TSHS – this means tenths of seconds and hundredths of seconds – just put in 00 after your minutes:seconds entry).

Competitor numbers:  for the mile races and photo-timed sprints, we will use a Competitor number to link your results to your details.  If you have already registered for our senior track and field events season, you will have a competitor number, and no further action is required. We will use that number. However, if you haven’t registered for the season, you will be assigned a competitor number on the day.
