Vosseler Shield

WHAC nearly called the event off after the torrential rain in the morning. The rain abated for the 5km race but returned for the 10km race, resulting in falls, slips and mud. 67 Scottish runners took part in total. Frank Grieve ran both the 5k and the 10k as his first foray into XC — we expect to see him back for the Dorne Cup.

Seamus Kane joined an elite group of runners who have defended their title at the Vosseler Shield. Ali Wilson was second in a tight race — just one second ahead of Vic Uni’s Maia Flint. Despite the conditions, Don Stevens was over a minute faster than last year. Floor Kaars Sijpesteijn, Peter Shaw, Alice Sowry and Michael Cummins had a close race, with just 16 seconds separating the four of them.

In the team events, there was a thrilling finish in the open women’s team event, with Ali Wilson, Mel Brandon and Ali Campbell just beating Victoria University and WHAC by 1 and 2 points, respectively. The open men also won, as did the M35s and W35s, who had a perfect score, with all three places on the podium. The W50s, M50s and M60s all claimed second place.

Short course: Spike Hayvice took out the short course – 7km / 200m vert / 42:58. He flew down the final 2km descent to cross almost a minute ahead of Fiona Hayvice.

Long course: Matt Mintrom got 2nd on a muddy, slippery course that went down expert-grade mountain biking tracks. He says the sun shone and made for a fun but challenging course. Kyle Malone was 10th, Gordon Pal 2:10:55 (18th open male)

Medium course: Kath Littler 1:52:10 (14th female masters 40s) Karen Jenkinson 2:06:39 (5th female masters 50s) Caroline Fyfe 2:08:22 (6th female masters 50s)

IFAM, Oordegem

Hamish Carson ran 5000m in 13:45.65 (29th)

Childcare query during Gazley Volkswagen Wellington Half Marathon

We’ve been contacted by Australian Masters runner Michael Jackson from Queensland (Toowong Harriers, Qld Masters). He and his wife are visiting Wellington to run the Gazley Volkswagen Wellington Half Marathon at the end of June. Their 12-year-old son is also visiting but not running. Michael is asking if other running parents have their kids doing something or hanging out somewhere during the races. If so, he’d like to know what, as he’s trying to work out what he’ll do. If you can help, Michael’s email is mikejjack@gmail.com.
