Dorne Cup

Race report from Simon Keller:

It’s hard to believe on this dreary Wellington Sunday, but Upper Hutt put on a stunner for the Dorne Cup yesterday. On a dry, fast course, there were several exciting races and strong performances from Scottish athletes. Here are a few I noticed: please add others and photos if you have them.

Bex Hutchinson, Alice Sowry, Isla Turner-Holmes and Dani Stevens made a strangely happy-looking group in the senior women’s race, all running strongly through their smiles. In the senior men’s, Joel Carman led the Scottish squad, finishing 11th overall, and Alistair Richardson continued his run of form to take 20th.

Mel Brandon won the women’s 35s with a stomping run, leading home a strong Scottish team including Emily Solsberg and Hinano Andrews. Michele Allison won the women’s 65s, almost four minutes clear of the rest of the field.

The ever-impressive Hiro Tani made it a pair of 35s titles, winning the men’s by almost 30 seconds, with Alasdair Saunders and captain Jamie White also making the top 10.

I was warming up during the kids’ races, but I have it on good authority that Nicholas Cottingham, Georgie Street, Naomi Richardson, and Ben Cleland ran well and had fun—along, I’m sure, with many others.

Peter Stevens had an entertaining race at the front of the men’s 60s field, finishing second.

We in the men’s 50s (I’m still not used to saying that) showed the way, with Todd Stevens and me first and second, eight finishers among the field of 31, four of the top six placings and six of the top 12, and a very clear team win. It was especially nice to see Michael Wray back on the Dorne Cup course, running through the pain for a solid 19th place.

The after-match at Abandoned Brewery in Petone was a big success too, still going strong when I headed off into the twilight.

There’s a break in the interclub season now, but we’ll be back in yellow for the Wellington Cross-Country Champs on Sunday, 21 July.

Trail Lagoa de Óbidos, Portugal

David Hosking competed in a 12km trail race in Portugal on the weekend. He was fourth overall and first M55.

Dolomiti Xtreme 55km ultra, Italy

David Hosking finished in 09:40:03. He says after this race he returns to NZ and hopefully a few club races.

Trail club run at Club Kelburn, 22 June

We have scheduled a second trial club run for Club Kelburn on Saturday 22 June. See next week’s newsletter for more details. In the meantime, we welcome any feedback about the first trial run at Club K, and about how we do club runs in general. Among the suggestions we have received so far are moving the club run to Sunday mornings, and holding it later on Saturdays (perhaps at 4.30pm to leave the day clear and lead into an evening drink). Please send any feedback and suggestions to Simon (stkeller30@gmail.com) or any other member of the management committee.

Galashiels Trophy/Novice Cup and Cole Land Cup, Eastbourne, 30 June, 9:05am

We are trying something different for the Galashiels Trophy and Novice Cup this year. We will hold the event on the morning of Sunday June 30. It’s still the same 4.9km course providing a mix of terrain, with the handicap format hopefully providing some good battles and close finishes. The change in start time provides an opportunity to race hard, run a tempo and/or run as part of a longer Sunday run towards Pencarrow or in the Eastern Hills. We will be looking to coordinate lifts and organise some packs of different abilities for those looking for an extended run.

North Island Cross Country Champs, Taupō, 6 July

This is a great opportunity for a fun weekend away with other club members. It is one of the main club away trips that we promote during the harrier season.

The NIXCC includes events for juniors, seniors and masters over a variety of distances up to 9 km (for the senior men). The courses in Spa Park are over undulating terrain, and they provide a good test of fitness. The conditions underfoot are almost always firm and fast. The event is well-managed and attracts competitors from many North Island regions.

The weekend away is good value, because we arrange car-pooling, and stay together in group accommodation. There is an opportunity on Saturday night to have a group dinner and socialise with other clubs

Please register your interest now and book yourself away that weekend. We recommend that you plan on departing Wellington around midday Friday so that we can issue your race pack to you on Friday evening.

We usually arrange a Sunday morning run in Taupō before we depart for home.

National Cross-country Championships 2024, Napier, 3-4 August

This is a great opportunity to have a fun weekend away with other club members, compete in one of the national championship events, watch the other senior events unfold, and participate in the mixed relay on Sunday, 4 August.

This is one of the main club away trips that we promote during the harrier season, and the club will subsidise entries and transport.

The NZXC includes events for juniors, seniors, and masters over a variety of distances up to 10 km (for the senior men). Whilst there isn’t yet any information available regarding the course or schedule, we are reliably informed that it is a proper cross-country course with ups, downs, mud, and obstacles.

The weekend away will be good value because we arrange car-pooling, and stay together in group accommodation. There will also be an opportunity on Saturday night to have a group meal and some beverages (but not too many, as the relay is on Sunday morning)

Please register your interest now and book yourself away that weekend. We recommend that you plan on departing Wellington around midday Friday so that we can issue your race pack to you on Friday evening.
