Martin brothers update

Alex Martin is in his first year at McNeese State University on a track scholarship. Last weekend (14 April), Alex broke a 52-year-old school record in the 800-meters when he clocked a 1:49.07 at a meet to win the event. That broke the old record of 1:49.12 that was held by McNeese Hall of Famer and Irish Olympian, the late Fanahan McSweeney.

This has put Alex No 1 in the 800m in the Southland Conference, eighth in the region and 45th in the NCAA East region. It has also put him No 1 in the U20 800m ANZ rankings, and has now met the Worlds U20 800m qualification standard for the championship being held in Lima, Peru in August. He’s waiting to hear about selection, but still has a few more races to go for the US outdoor track season.

Alex winning the 800m at the SFA Carl Kight Invitational, Texas 1:49.07.

Joe Martin is in Year 12 at Wellington College where last year he broke the school record in the U16 800m, which had been in place for 12 years.

At the recent NZ Secondary School North Island Track & Field Champs, Joe got two new PBs to end the season. He won the Senior 800m in a new PB of 1:54.65 and came a close 2nd in the Senior 1500m with a time of 3:58.59. Joe was also part of the Wellington senior boys winning 4×400 relay team. Joe had the fastest 400 split in 49.814.

Notes about results

  • We don’t have AI software or professionals scanning through results. We don’t aim to report every club member’s results — just those we find out about.
  • We’ll publish a result and what makes it special if we’re told about it. So let us know what you, your friends, family members and teammates are up to. It is especially important for coaches to let us know when your athletes are achieving their goals.
  • If you don’t want your name published in the newsletter or on the website, please let us know so we can omit you from the results.
