Gold Coast Marathon

Some impressive results from across the Tasman this weekend.

Half Marathon: Emma Perron 01:16:19, Lindsay Young finished in 1:39:45 (an 8:30 PB, on top of her 10min PB set in April), and Marianne Elliott finished in 1:46 (PB).

Marathon: Simon Keller 02:49:52, Emma Bassett 3:14:55 (PB)

North Island Cross Country Championships, Taupō

U18 Ben Brunner was 10th in the U18 race in 16:54.6. Bradley Christison was 22nd in the senior men’s race in 31:50.0. John Skinnon won the M75 race and improved on his master course record by seconds with a run of 32:47.

Oliver McLean was 3rd senior man.

Wellington team selections

Congratulations to Ben Brunner (M18), Stephen Day (M35), Peter Stevens (M50), Ayesha Shafi (W35), Emily Solsberg (W35) and Heather Walker (W50), who were named in the initial Wellington team for the NZ Cross Country Championships. Peter Stevens was also named in the Wellington team for the North Island Championships this past weekend.

Galashiels Trophy and Novice Cup, 8 July

This popular 4.9km race is run over various terrain, including footpaths/roads and an uphill bush track. It starts on Muritai Road, Eastbourne. If you can help with marshalling or volunteering, please get in touch with Marshall.

Cole Land Cup, 8 July

At the same venue and time as the Galashiels Trophy race, the walkers will contest the Cole Land Cup, an open handicap race over approximately 5km.

WUU2K, 15 July

WUU2K is Wellington’s premier trail ultra marathon. This iconic event takes runners on a journey around Wellington’s best trails and scenery. Options include a 21km half marathon, a 43km marathon, and a 62km ultramarathon.

Scottish once again will be taking over the Wind Turbine aid station, and we’re on the lookout for at least three more volunteers to join Lindsay Young, Ali Campbell, Marianne Elliott, and Kyle Malone as they cheer on all the runners and make sure they stay fed, hydrated, and motivated. Bonus points if you’re tall and can help set up the tent. If you’re keen, the volunteer entry form is here. Make sure you specify the Wind Turbine/Wellington Scottish aid station.

Wellington Cross Country Champs, 16 July

The course will be based on a 2km lap of Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt, the same as used last year. The lap has a mixture of flat and undulating cross-country running and is suitable for spikes. Note the shorter race distances and earlier race times compared to last year.

Halcombe Relay, 22 July

A six-person relay run/walk along 29.2 km of scenic Manawatu rural roads. Feilding Moa Harriers extend an open invitation to other running clubs, social groups from workplaces or other sports to join them in a relay through the quiet undulating roads of the Manawatu countryside. The route encompasses Legs 3, 4 and 5 of the 2020 NZ Road Relays course.

Race headquarters is the Olympic Harrier Clubrooms, Alex Moore Park, Bannister Avenue, Johnsonville. The race walk commences at 9.30am with 4 laps = 6.4km, and the run starts at 9.45am with 5 laps = 8km.

NZ Cross Country Champs and Cross Country Relays, 29-30 July

The cross-country championships bring together the best distance runners in NZ — and they are also an excellent opportunity for a club weekend away with runners of all speeds and ambitions.

Wellington Road Championships, Wainuiomata, 19 August

The Wellington Road Champs is the last of the four big interclub races for the year. It is an excellent opportunity to run a fast 5km or 10km time with a large pack of runners to pull you along. It is held in the scenic Wainuiomata Recreation Area. The course is an out-and-back road race using a 1.25km stretch of road that is closed to public traffic. The course is largely sheltered from the wind.

Needle Relay, Kilbirnie, 26 August

A short sharp road relay around Evans Bay and Cobham Drive with teams of five, alternating 5km and 3km laps.

Ballantyne Cup and Shirley Barton Trophy, Miramar, 2 September

6km handicapped road race. The Ballantyne Cup (men) and Shirley Barton Trophy (women) are the club’s most long-standing and arguably most prestigious Scottish trophies.
