Three Peaks No. 3

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday for our last event of the 3 Peaks Series for 2025.There were over 120 of you across all events and thanks for donating to The Wellington City Mission – please donate if you attended and did an event, we really appreciate it! The last event had some opportunities to run an “optimised” route and Walter Somerville took the honours for doing it in less than 15kms and also being the quickest across the course. Gus the Dog took overall honours of all three events for being the most consistent and patient waiting for the humans at every turn. (Even when he knew there was a quicker way). Also among the competitors was a large contingent from the Scottish W35 squad and Karen Jenkinson and Don Stevens.

The Scottish Mentor Programme is Live!

One valuable part of being a member of Wellington Scottish is having access to a group of experienced runners, who have been through the seasons and know the running community inside-out. Our mentor programme has been built to help Wellington runners to connect with their community and to find a home in the sport.

Mentors allow prospective and new club members to connect with someone who knows a thing or two about how to get the most out of a membership with Scottish. If you know someone who is interested in joining a running club, but is unsure of how it all works, send them to one of our fine mentors.

9 August: Scottish paced Waitangi parkrun

Wellington Scottish will partner with Waitangi Parkrun to provide pacers on Saturday, 9 August. We have had plenty of positive feedback from earlier paced events.

Please sign up on the Stack Duty Roster if you’d like to pace one of the listed times, or message Chris Howard if you’d like to pace something else. We will continue to do this about once every two months; see 18 October, and 6 December in Stack.

It is very easy to Pace. Consider using it as a friendly warm-up to your Saturday session and hanging with your Scottish clubmates over a coffee at Raglan Roast afterwards. You’ll also get volunteer credit from Parkrun.

23 August: Wellington 5km Road Championships

The Wellington 5km and 10km Road Champs are the last of the big interclub races for the season. They are an excellent opportunity to run a fast 5km or 10km time with a large pack of runners to pull you along. They are held in the scenic Wainuiomata Recreation Area. The course is an out-and-back road race using a 1.25km stretch of road that is closed to public traffic. The course is largely sheltered from the wind.

4 October: NZ Road Relays, Feilding

National Road Relays will be held in Feilding on Saturday 4 October. This is the club’s biggest and most enjoyable event of the year. Please keep the weekend free and make sure you can come along. You can express your interest in participating here.

Accommodation will be in two hotels in Palmerston North, for the nights of Friday 3 October and Saturday 4 October. We have a venue booked for our club dinner on Saturday 4 October. Travel to and from Palmerston North will be in a combination of private cars and rental vans. Costs will be subsidised by grants and club funds. We have tentatively set the cost per athlete at $200, which will include race entry, accommodation, the club dinner, any van or car rental, and a special Scottish-themed gift (sounds like socks to me, but who can say for sure?). We will ask for payment later, when costs have been confirmed. The club is willing to offer additional individual needs-based subsidies. Please contact a member of the management committee to enquire.
