New Zealand Road Relay Champs 2024

Nearly 100 rampant lions headed to Tāupo for the NZRR champs on Saturday, held at the motorsport track. Our 14 teams took on the new relay format (and the cold sou’westerly wind) with PRIDE. Being able to support each and every one of our runners and walkers as they came through the pit lane was a great highlight, as was the team dinner and baton presentations (which were ‘virtual’ this year). Scottish was second on the podium for ‘top club’, narrowly missing first place, which went to Whippets Running Project. A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise such a fantastic weekend; in particular John Gardiner, Don Stevens, Alistair Collow and Meg Ferry.

U14 boys grade, which we entered a mixed team in, placed 2nd.

Senior Men, placed 11th. Baton presented to Joe Martin.

Senior Men B, placed 29th. Baton presented to Matyas James.

Senior Women, placed 12th. Baton presented to Alice Sowry.

W35 A – GOLD. Baton presented to Anna Hooper.

W35 B, placed 10th. Baton presented to Jiwon Chun. A baton was also given to team mascot Lake Elliott.

M35, placed 5th. Baton presented to Stephen Day.

M50 – GOLD. Baton presented to Dave Kettles.

O60 A – GOLD (first ever Scottish O60 title). Baton presented to Phil Sadgrove.

O60 B, placed 7th. Baton presented to Dave Hatfield.

Social team A, placed 22nd. Baton presented to Karyn McLean.

Social team B, noted as DNF though four of our crew ran their legs. However they ended up two runners short due to ‘poaching’ by other Scottish teams! The baton presented to John Skinnon who turned up on his bike to watch the event and kindly agreed to run for the team.

Scottish A walkers, placed 2nd

Scottish B walkers, placed 4th

The walkers baton presented to Helen Willis.

Waitangi parkrun paced events

Following the success of the special parkrun ‘paced’ event in honour of Dougal Thorburn; Waitangi parkrun and Scottish have teamed up to make this a monthly event for the next six months. At our event on Saturday 21 September we had a phenomenal showing from the club, contributing to a record 540 runners at Waitangi, which in turn was a record week across parkrun in New Zealand. Being a pacer helps people achieve their goals and continues to connect us as a club to the wider community – and it’s fun!

Each month we’ll put a call out for pacers on the Scottish facebook page; and make it an event on the Stack App. Chris Howard will be seeking pacers through facebook posts about a week in advance. You can also message Chris as he’s the key liaison point to make this happen.

Look out for the call to pace this coming week on 5 October. We will likely be offering pacers for 20-30 minutes for every two minutes (tbc).

The placeholder dates are:

5 October, 9 November, 7 December, 11 January 2025, 8 February 2025 and (tbc) 8 March 2025

Notes about results

  • We’ll publish a result and what makes it special if we’re told about it. So let us know what you, your friends, family members and teammates are up to. It is especially important for coaches to let us know when your athletes are achieving their goals.
  • If you don’t want your name published in the newsletter or on the website, please let us know so we can omit you from the results.

Lifestyle Sports Night of Miles, 14 Dec

This unique event is full of Christmas fun and features races over the rarely run distance of one mile. Each year, we collect donations from athletes and spectators and hand them on to a local Wellington charity. For the competitive events in the programme where pre-entry is required, we have set a $10 entry fee that will be part of the donations.

The programme includes a mix of children’s, senior and fun social events. There are several different mile races, including elite men’s and women’s races and an all-comers mile that anyone can participate in (including Father Christmas). Subject to interest, some field events may be added to the programme.
