Recruitment and participation coordinator

Wellington Scottish Athletics Club is seeking to contract a dynamic, people-focused individual to lead recruitment and engagement, focusing on athletes in the 18 to 35-year age range.

The successful candidate will ideally have a background in sport—preferably athletics—and a proven ability to develop and deliver programmes to increase participation and engagement.

The Management Committee of Wellington Scottish Athletics Club is seeking applications from both club members and friends/acquaintances of club members who have the right attributes to succeed in this role.

Applications close on Monday 8 July, and should be sent to the committee with the following:

  • A cover note outlining why you are applying for this role
  • A summary of your relevant skills and experience
  • A one-page action plan outlining your proposed approach to recruitment and participation targets outlined in the attached role description

A panel including the President WSAC and two members of the committee will review applications and arrange interviews with shortlisted candidates.

Senior men’s A team captain

Hamish Carson is taking on the Senior Men’s A team Club captain role, focusing on developing a competitive Senior Men’s A team. The club management committee is working with Megan Ferry (Women’s Captain) to identify someone to take on the Women’s A team role.

Welcome to new club member Simon Reynolds.

Coming up

Galashiels Trophy/Novice Cup and Cole Land Cup, Eastbourne, 30 June

The Galashiels and Novice Cup takes place next Sunday morning, with the first athlete due off around 9.05am.

For those who haven’t run this race before, it is an open handicap over a 4.9km course that is a mixture of pavement and bush trail with one small rise after around 1.5km.

Further details can be found on the website, including the history behind the race.

Galashiels Trophy and Novice Cup – Wellington Scottish Athletics Club

For those heading out there, we are proposing car sharing – please use the poll on Facebook to note whether you can give someone a lift or need a lift – or if you’re not on Facebook reply to this email. We are suggesting meeting out the front of Wellington Station at 8am to head over there en masse.

We meet at Muritai School from 8.30am onwards – you can leave bags there whilst you are racing.

If you ran at Wellington Marathon and don’t fancy racing – or if you want an extended warm-up / warm-down – there are a number of Sunday long run options in the area.

An area has been booked at Day Bay Pavilion from 10am or so until 11.45am for a post-race coffee and cake and the prize giving.

We are looking for volunteers to help with marshaling – please let Andy and James know if you are able to help.

Athletics Wellington Cross Country Champs, 21 July

Harcourt Park, Akatarawa Road, Upper Hutt. Races start from 11.00am. The course will be based on a 2km lap, which will be the same as used last year. The lap has a mixture of flat and undulating cross country running, and is suitable for spikes. Each lap crosses a tarsealed road twice. More information is on the Athletics Wellington website.

National Cross-country Championships 2024, Napier, 3-4 August

This is a great opportunity to have a fun weekend away with other club members, compete in one of the national championship events, watch the other senior events unfold, and participate in the mixed relay on Sunday, 4 August.

This is one of the main club away trips that we promote during the harrier season, and the club will subsidise entries and transport.

The NZXC includes events for juniors, seniors, and masters over a variety of distances up to 10 km (for the senior men). Whilst there isn’t yet any information available regarding the course or schedule, we are reliably informed that it is a proper cross-country course with ups, downs, mud, and obstacles.

The weekend away will be good value because we arrange car-pooling, and stay together in group accommodation. There will also be an opportunity on Saturday night to have a group meal and some beverages (but not too many, as the relay is on Sunday morning)

Please register your interest now and book yourself away that weekend. We recommend that you plan on departing Wellington around midday Friday so that we can issue your race pack to you on Friday evening.

Needle Relay, Kilbirne, 17 August

More details to come.
