University Relay

With 22 teams entered, I can’t list everyone’s names, but here are a few highlights. The 170 Gold team (Rowan Hooper, Lindsay Barwick, Dougal Thorburn, Mel Brandon) bossed the rest of the competition around to win their grade in the inaugural event. The Scottish Karearea team (Hamish Carson, Maddy Watson, Joel Carman, Beth Garland) picked up third in the Open grade, with Beth running the second fastest lap of the day. The 240 Ferraris (Peter Stevens, Marianne Elliott, Paul Rodway, Wendy Sanderson) overcame some baton confusion among their male team members and picked up 3rd place, with a big last lap from Wendy to pull the team from 5th to 3rd. The Scottish U14 Lions (Naomi Richardson, Ben Cleland, Nicholas Cottingham) had a tie with Olympic Orange in the 2km Under 14 race. Scottish 170 Red (Nick Horspool, Susan O’Brien, Paul Barwick, Emily Solsberg) and Scottish Taniwha (Callum Mallett, Charlie Hulley, Liam O’Neill, Tim Hodge) had a back-and-forth battle with the lead changing a couple of times before Emily held off a fast finishing Tim to secure a slim victory.

Brian Tyler – Obituary

Older members will be saddened to learn that Brian passed away on 10 May, aged 92. He joined Scottish in the early 1960s from Auckland, where he was part of Arthur Lydiard’s original training group. He won’t mind me saying that he was the only one of that group who never became a champion! But he was a lifelong devotee of Lydiard’s philosophies and trained assiduously. When he retired, he bought a racehorse, which he trained with those methods—with some success!

When we built our clubhouse, incorporating squash courts he used his financial expertise to assist in drawing up the financial agreement with squash that ensured the lasting prosperity of Scottish. At NZ Inland Revenue, he became their expert in tax avoidance by major companies, guiding the prosecution of Europa Oil. After a Harkness Fellowship to the USA, he became a key figure at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London. He finished his career as NZ Controller & Auditor General – one of the top public figures.

Pack runs at Club Kelburn, 18 May

On Saturday, 18 May, the club will hold its pack runs at Club Kelburn. This is the first part of a trial, to see if we would like to set up a longer-term relationship.

Club Kelburn is at 65 Salamanca Rd Kelburn. There is plenty of parking around the tennis courts and in a separate lot below the gym. There are several bus routes that stop on Salamanca Road. Arrive at 1.40, and we’ll have a quick tour of the gym before getting changed and heading out for pack runs at 2.00. The gym is close to Kelburn Park, the Botanical Gardens, Boyd Wilson Field, Tinakori Hill, the Aro Valley, and the waterfront – no excuses for failing to find somewhere good to run!

From 3.00, we’ll have showers, snacks, tea, and coffee available. We’ll also have exclusive access to the sauna, and the club bar will be open, featuring very affordable beer.

If you can’t make it for a run, you’re still welcome to join us for food and drink (or a sauna) at 3.00.

If you have any questions in advance, and especially if you are willing to be a pack leader, contact Simon
