WUU2K
Emily Solsberg says, “the WUU2k was out of this world, and it was a perfect day.”
21km – Jonas Lehmann was 2nd in 2:10. James Parsons was not far behind in 2:14.
43km. The women’s 43k was an amazing showing from Scottish women — all of whom were looking really great coming through the turbine. 1st was Michelle Ashley in 4:44:13, 6th was Floortje Kaars in 5:33:53 (3rd open woman), 8th was Emily Solsberg in 5:41:55 and 10th was Emma Bassett in 5:58:41 (in an extremely Emma side note – she stopped mid-race to get her photo taken with the FIFA women’s world cup which was on display at the park near Adelaide Rd) and Laura Bond finished in 6:17:17. James Richardson ran with an injury from Makara onwards and finished 6th man, 1st veteran man in 4:27:40. Matt Mintom was not far behind in 4:32:24. Chris Howard finished alongside Emma in 5:58:40.
62km – Fantastic runs from Ali Wilson, the first woman (9th overall) in 6:49:10, and Mel Aitken in 7:39:37 (1st veteran woman). Calum Murphy 7:34:14 and Charles Navarro 7:34:42 finished mere seconds apart. Gordon Pal finished in 8:29:45.
Marianne Elliot reports: “The Scottish aid station at the Wind Turbine was organised by Mal Kerr and Lindsay Young and led on that day by Lindsay with a strong team of Kyle Malone, Anna Breen, Frank Grieve, John Moulds, Ali Souch, Emily O’Reirdon, Rachel Collingridge and myself. The event organisers told me at the pub later that they heard from a few runners that the Turbine aid station was the best of the day because we gave them such great service (we were refilling people’s flasks and bladders for them while they ate, relaced or whatever).”
Wellington Cross Country Championships
Junior races — Abby Cleland 8th GU10 and Rowan Richardson 22nd BU10 in the 1km race. Naomi Richardson, 16th GU12, Spike Hayvice, 11th BU12, Archie McPhee, 13th BU14 and Ben Cleland, 21st BU14, in the 2km race.
4km race — Heather Walker won the W50 race. Betty Harp was 3rd W60, and Loretta Desourdy and Bev Hodge were 2nd and 3rd W65, respectively. Phil Sadgrove was the sole Scottish entrant in the M60s. Chris Harp was 2nd M65, Paul Rodway won the M70 race, Sam Cleland was 14th in the MU16s, and Tait Keller was 7th MU18.
8km race — It was a 1,2,3 in the senior men for Seamus Kane, Daniel Jones and Niam Macdonald. Rowan Hooper was 3rd in the M35s, and it looks like Alasdair Saunders and Andrew Wharton had a close tussle for 7th place, separated by just 0.1 of a second. Peter Stevens won the M50s race. Alice Sowry continued her strong cross-country season with a 7th-place finish in the senior women’s race. Emily Solsberg and Lindsay Young were 3rd and 5th, respectively, in the W35 race. (Emily was following up after being 5th W40 vet in the 43km WUU2k the day before). Alistair Collow and Leah Holden arrived 30 minutes late and ran their own race in a leisurely fashion.
