Round the Bays — recruiting new members
If your friends, colleagues, or training buddies are taking part in Round the Bays, this is the perfect moment to invite them into something bigger than a single event. If they enjoy the run, tell them how much they might enjoy a year‑round community with coaching, support, new friendships, and regular events that keep the motivation alive after Round the Bays.
We’ll have a Scottish tent, flyers and sign‑up sheets waiting at the finish line — we just need your conversations with people you know who are participating and your enthusiasm. A quick chat, a friendly nudge, or even walking them over to the tent could be what brings a new member into the club.
If you can help, please let Stephen know.
2026 AGM and planning for the year
We have set the date for our Annual General Meeting. It will be on 9 March, at 5.30, at Wilton Bowling Club. More details and an agenda will be available beforehand. The bar will be open, the club will provide some snacks, and some of us will meet for a run beforehand. And it’s an AGM! You won’t want to miss it.
At the AGM, we will elect our next management committee. We would love to expand our committee, in terms of both numbers and demographics.
The committee meets once a month. It sets the club’s overall direction. Ideally, it contains a president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary, and some general committee members. Joining the committee does not need to be a big investment of time. It is a management committee, not a volunteer force!
If you would like to stand for the committee, come along to the AGM. Or if you can’t make the AGM, contact me or another committee member in advance, and we can nominate you in absentia.
There are many other ways to contribute to the club, apart from being on the committee, and if there is something else you would like to do for the club, we would love to have you involved. Here are some roles that we’d like to fill for the new season:
Recruitment coordinator. Working with the committee and the section captains, you would help bring new members into the club and make them feel welcome. This role has a great deal of potential; you could do it in whatever way you think best, and the club will put some money behind you.
Programme coordinator. You would help set our programme of events for the year, deciding which events the club should offer, and fitting them around the major NZ and Wellington events. This is a great job for anyone who loves planning and doesn’t mind a spreadsheet.
Social media maven. You would take the lead in deciding which platforms the club should have a presence on and in ensuring our presence is consistent and positive. This is a great job for someone who knows how social media works and wants to present our best face to the world.
Coaching coordinator. You would encourage club members to make themselves available as coaches, and then link them up with members – often our newest members – looking for coaching and mentoring. This is a rewarding role, great for anyone who likes bringing people together.
Those are some existing roles we would like to fill. But there is always room for anyone with ideas and energy who wants to make the club better. Please contact me anytime if you have an idea about how you could contribute to Wellington Scottish.
Happy running, and hope to see you at the AGM!
Simon

Troya Marathon in Türkiye
Wellington has been invited to send two runners to the International Troya Marathon in Çanakkale on 26 April 2026 (Wellington is a sister city with Çanakkale). Wellington City Council asks if this might be of interest to runners from Scottish? The course, starting from the Troy Archaeological site and finishing at the symbolic “horse” point in the centre of Çanakkale offers participants an historical journey, as well as a culturally significant route for international runners. The Council is not in a position to fund or financially support runners to go to Türkiye but Çanakkale Municipality (the local council) has said it will cover the accommodation expenses for two nights for two athletes from Wellington. We don’t have a great deal more information than that, but if there is interest from anyone, Wellington Council is keen to connect them directly to the International Relations team in Çanakkale Municipality.

The Half Marathon is the classic route you know and love, on a fully measured, endorsed and certified half-marathon course. Each route is packed with entertainment, making the iconic event Wellington’s biggest street party.

All track and field events are on the programme (including 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 5000m Walk and Steeplechase).

The event includes four Trail Runs (6km, 14km Half Marathon & Marathon), Duathlon and Mountain Bike events. XTERRA Wellington embraces the rugged coastal landscape that is Kāpiti. There’s no glitz nor glamour, just hard New Zealand terrain, spectacular views and proper home-grown hospitality. XTERRA Wellington links the beach to the mountains in a uniquely west coast way.
9 March: Scottish Annual General Meeting
5.30, at Wilton Bowling Club. More details and an agenda will be available beforehand. The bar will be open, the club will provide some snacks, and some of us will meet for a run beforehand. At the AGM, we will elect our next management committee. We would love to expand our committee, in terms of both numbers and demographics.
14 March: Centennial Cup and Peter Tearle Handicap Walk
This is a flat 5km club race along the south coast waterfront, starting at Island Bay at 2pm. This is the traditional opening race of the season, in which members compete for the Centennial Cup. It is a sealed handicap event where our handicapper has estimated your time over 5km to determine your handicap. Everyone starts together, and the finishing times are adjusted by your handicap to determine your net time and the overall winner of the Cup.
We meet beforehand at St Hilda’s Church, 311 The Parade, to store gear. Then we return afterwards for afternoon tea. Bring a plate, please.
18 April: New Zealand and Wellington Mountain Running Champs
The NZ Mountain Running Championships are in Johnsonville, Wellington, set along the iconic Skyline Track over Mt Kaukau. This classic up‑and‑down course sends runners out and back along the western hills, starting and finishing at the northern end of the trail before tracing the ridge line south toward Mt Kaukau and beyond.
