Ironman 70.3 World Championships, Taupō

Danielle Trewoon 5:40:46 (167th W30-34), Susan O’Brien 5:21:25 (84th W35-39), Sierra Ryland 5:17:20 (48th W40-44), Rachael Cunningham 5:24:03 (42nd 45-49), Tanya Lavington 5:51:52 (18th W60-64), Michele Allison 5:38:18 (3rd W65-69 – Bronze!), Peter Kelly 4:46:53 (78th M45-49), Dean Galt 4:53:17 (81st M50-54), Gerard Gordon 4:50:21 (28th M55-59), James Turner 5:33:45 (101st M60-64), Richard Sweetman 8:10:26 (17th M7-79).

Event report from James Turner: “Suffice to say it was a fantastic event and experience. Hot weather. Hot competition: elites – you’ll have seen that Hayden Wilde was once again run down towards the finish and had to settle for silver; age groups – by far the strongest and deepest fields I’ve ever seen in any triathlon. Remember everyone competing had to qualify at a 70.3 event generally by being in the top 5% or so of their age group. People like me and Rachael qualified back in 2020! In total there were 6000 competitors with some age groups (5 year bands) having 500 or so racers!! The town was buzzing and the support throughout but especially on the run course was fantastic. Having that many from Scottish is deserving of kudos. Tri Wellington was the largest represented club out of the 400 or so NZers and we had 30% of them from Scottish. Note that there were 1500 US, 800 Aussie, 400 French, 400 brits and 400 Germans competing. A real world champs.”

Mentor programme

From Ryan, our Participation and Recruitment Coordinator: A big part of our push to engage our membership and grow the club has been to shine a light on some aspects of the incredible community that we’re all part of. One valuable part of being a member of Wellington Scottish is having access to a group of experienced runners, who have been through the seasons and know the club/sport inside-out. For all Wellington runners who would like to join a club and are looking at Scottish, I’d like to make this part of our community more accessible. So, I’m creating a mentor programme that allows both prospective and new club members to connect with someone who knows a thing or two about how to get the most out of a membership with Scottish. If you’re interested in joining the programme, read on!
Here’s how you can provide value as a mentor:

  • Being a friendly, familiar face to new members who see the value in joining a running club, but don’t know anyone in the community
  • Providing members info on the club landscape and who they should be turning to for certain resources
  • Providing new members insight into club and inter-club events, and being a cheerleader for them on race day.

Though you may be willing and able to provide training advice, you’re not expected to act explicitly as a coach.

What’s next?

  • I’ll be creating a page on the website dedicated to mentors who are willing to connect with prospective and new members.
  • Fill out this form – I’ll be using the prompts to create your profile for the website page (you’ll receive a draft to sign off on before I publish).
  • I’ll be in contact with all mentors before this goes live – just in case anything needs tweaking.
  • Wait for folks to reach out to you! Communication and meeting arrangements will be on your terms.

Backyard Ultra is coming to Wellington thanks to Fiona Hayvice. Complete a 6.71km course within an hour, every hour, until only one remains. Whether you’re an experienced ultra-runner or just looking to finish a few laps, all targets are welcome! But beware, regardless of your goal, people typically run further than they’ve ever gone before.

The inaugural M*A*S*H Backyard Ultra will take place at Queen Elizabeth Park on Wellington Anniversary weekend, with encampment in the paddock next to the Ramaroa Centre, Mackays Crossing. Battle begins at 9am, Saturday 18 January.

Inspired by the 1970s TV series M*A*S*H, this event – Mobile Athlete’s Seaside Haven – pays tribute to the U.S. Marines who defended Aotearoa from 1942 to 1944. Partnering with the Kāpiti U.S. Marines Trust, funds raised will help restore WWII on-site exhibits.
