Welcome to new club members Tom Simcock and Talia Flannery.

Mentor programme

From Ryan, our Participation and Recruitment Coordinator: A big part of our push to engage our membership and grow the club has been to shine a light on some aspects of the incredible community that we’re all part of. One valuable part of being a member of Wellington Scottish is having access to a group of experienced runners, who have been through the seasons and know the club/sport inside-out. For all Wellington runners who would like to join a club and are looking at Scottish, I’d like to make this part of our community more accessible. So, I’m creating a mentor programme that allows both prospective and new club members to connect with someone who knows a thing or two about how to get the most out of a membership with Scottish. If you’re interested in joining the programme, read on!
Here’s how you can provide value as a mentor:

  • Being a friendly, familiar face to new members who see the value in joining a running club, but don’t know anyone in the community
  • Providing members info on the club landscape and who they should be turning to for certain resources
  • Providing new members insight into club and inter-club events, and being a cheerleader for them on race day.

Though you may be willing and able to provide training advice, you’re not expected to act explicitly as a coach.

What’s next?

  • I’ll be creating a page on the website dedicated to mentors who are willing to connect with prospective and new members.
  • Fill out this form – I’ll be using the prompts to create your profile for the website page (you’ll receive a draft to sign off on before I publish).
  • I’ll be in contact with all mentors before this goes live – just in case anything needs tweaking.
  • Wait for folks to reach out to you! Communication and meeting arrangements will be on your terms.

Summer training programme

Check out the new summer training programme that Ryan Woolley has added to the team app. There are various options to choose from depending on how much running you want to do.

Ruapehu Trail camp, 9-12 January

The dates are marginally different from my original post, the same weekend, but starting on Thursday evening (9 January) or Friday morning, and finishing and returning home on Sunday 12 January.

Accommodation is at the Otaihape Alpine Club, who are kindly providing their gorgeous lodge up at Whakapapa skifield. Runs, fun times, stretching, learning, and a bit of a get-away. Come join in on the summer fun at the mountain. Runs are for all abilities, with a range of pace and skill level groups.

Please register for the camp here.

Get in quick, we are limited to 20 registrations. Food is provided, and you are encouraged to carpool from Wellington.

Coming up

Lifestyle Sports Night of Miles, 14 December

This unique event is full of Christmas fun and features races over the rarely run distance of one mile. We collect donations from athletes and spectators and hand them on to Mary Potter Hospice. For the competitive events in the programme where pre-entry is required, we have set a $10 entry fee that will be part of the donations.

The programme includes a mix of children’s, senior and fun social events. There are several different mile races, including elite men’s and women’s races and an all-comers mile that anyone can participate in (including Father Christmas). Subject to interest, some field events may be added to the programme.

Wellington Scottish Waterfront 5km race #3, 17 December

Bib pickup and bag drop off will be open from 5:00pm at Shed 22. If you already have a bib from the 2024/25 season please bring it along – you will be able to use it again this season. If you don’t already have a bib or are paying with a 10-trip card from last season, please swing by registration. Earlier is better – you want enough time to grab your bib and get warmed up!

We are offering an additional earlier start time of 5:30pm before our usual 5:45pm start time for anyone that needs a little bit more time on the course. If you think you will take longer than 30 mins, please consider starting in the earlier wave. This will help everyone finish closer together before prize giving – stick around for some spot prizes from our friends at Shoe Clinic.

We won’t be taking cash entries on the day this season. Any remaining 10 trip tickets from last season will still be honoured; use the 10-trip product when registering.

Information and entry

M*A*S*H Backyard Ultra, 18 January

$140 per soldier.

The inaugural M*A*S*H Backyard Ultra will take up refuge at Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast over Wellington Anniversary weekend. Encampment will materialise in the paddock next to the Ramaroa Centre, Mackays Crossing – an easy 35 min drive / 45 km north of Wellington City.

The M*A*S*H Backyard Ultra aka Mobile Athlete’s Seaside Haven pays homage to the young U.S. marines that encamped at QEP to defend Aotearoa between 1942 and 1944. M*A*S*H has partnered with the local, not-for-profit Kapiti U.S. Marines Trust, to help keep this significant WWII story alive. Funds raised through the event will aid the restoration of on-site exhibits.

If you’re new to Backyard Ultra – the format is simple. Complete a Yard (a 6.71km course), within the hour, every hour, otherwise you’re out. The winner is the ‘soldier’ who completes one more Yard than everyone else. Whether you’re an experienced ultra-runner or just looking to complete a few Yards, all targets are welcome!

The M*A*S*H course flows across paddocks, beside the coast, along the historic Yankee Trail, down ex-farm tracks, around wetlands, amongst kahikatea forest remnants, past historical landmarks and has approx. 60m of elevation. You can find out more about Queen Elizabeth Park HERE

ATTENTION! ‘Soldiers’ must be self-sufficient i.e. bring your own shelter, food, hydration and any other gear you need to keep lapping.

Spots are limited, so enlist quickly!
