New app
Last week we launched an app as a way to communicate and stay up to date with the club. It’s free and ad-free. To access it, download the Stack Team App from either Google Play or App Store or go to www.teamapp.com and sign up or log in to your account. Next, search for ‘Wellington Scottish’ and request to join. Once you’re signed up you can either access news and information on the app or on your computer via the website: wellingtonscottish.teamapp.com. If you don’t use the app, it will still keep you up-to-date by sending email notifications of events and news.
Some of the benefits of the app are:
- It can be a single place where people can find information about training, upcoming events, news and chat.
- It does not rely on people to have Facebook accounts.
- It is a space only for members where we can share future training plans and member benefits.
- It sends email notifications to people who do not have the app, so no one is excluded from news
- It is owned by the same company that runs our membership database system, so it will soon be complimentary.
If you have any questions, please ask.

Wellington Cross Country Championships
Race report from Simon Keller: “Race director Todd Stevens delivered a classic course on a perfect day for cross country at the Wellington Champs at Harcourt Park. It was sunny overhead and muddy underfoot. Here are a few Scottish performances that got me excited.
In the 4k, Joe Martin ran a masterful tactical race to win overall and take the men’s U18s. He held second up until the last km, then opened up 7secs to claim the win. Get him to road relays!
Michele Allison did what she does, wearing down the women’s 65s field and taking first place, with Loretta Desourdy following her home a few places back.
Peter Stevens turned the tables on WHAC’s Paul Hewitson, blasting away from the start line and sending the men’s 60s race early to bed.
The kids’ races featured a tenacious run from Naomi Richardson, and strong runs also from her brother Rowan and from Gemma Ferry. All seemed to have more fun in the mud than I did.
At the end of the 8k, women’s 35s stalwart Mel Brandon was astonished that the organisers insisted on giving her a gold medal when she was sure she’d run so terribly. Meanwhile, Bex Hutchinson, Nicola Hankinson, and Dani Stevens gave us a welcome presence in the women’s seniors.
We might have seen the first hint of a revival in the men’s seniors, with five finishers (I think) and Joel Carman and Alexander Dorgham finishing well up in the field.
The men’s 35s burst back onto the scene after a quiet Dorne Cup. Hiro Tanimoto and Ryan Woolley were first and second in a high-quality field, and we took four of the top ten places.
Once again, we dominated the men’s 50s, with six of the top ten spots and a big team victory. (Ed: Led, as Grant McLean noted, by a modest Simon ‘Unbeaten M50 Champ’ Keller.)
Onward to roads season. Rampantly.”

Supporters Trust Assistance for NZRR
The Wellington Scottish Supporters Trust provides financial support to assist some of our most promising athletes in achieving their goals. The trust’s main priority is to help high-performing junior and senior men and women athletes compete in major national and selected overseas events without finance being a constraint.
The trust would like to support senior men, senior women and juniors looking to race at the National Road Relays in Taupō and are therefore welcoming applications for assistance from individuals.
Please contact one of the trustees – James Turner, Sharon Wray, Glen Wallis – for further information.
For those wanting to support our most promising senior and junior athletes, donations to the trust are gratefully received, and make a substantial contribution to the ability of our top athletes to achieve their goals and reach their athletic potential. NZ Road Relays, Taupō
- Event Dates: 27 September – 29 September 2024

- Event Info: Athletics NZ – NZRR Info – 2024
Mark your calendars; the most exciting day in the NZ running calendar is drawing near! The NZ Road Relay Championships 2024 will be held in Taupō, and we need a large pack of rampant lions there. Road relays is our biggest club trip each year. Whether you’re keen to bring out your competitive side or just want to come along for a fun social weekend, there’s a place for everyone in the team.
This year’s format is innovative — we will be racing on the motorsport track for the first time ever. It’ll be flat and fast, with different laps of shorter and longer distances. More details are available at Athletics NZ.
The all-inclusive cost of the trip is $225 per person. The cost includes:
- Race entry
- Transport (Bus)
- Accommodation at the Top10 or Chevron Motel in Taupō on Friday and Saturday nights
- Buffet dinner on Saturday night
The club is hiring two buses and encouraging all club members and supporters to use this option to travel to Taupō. However, club members can also make their own travel arrangements. The buses will leave (approximately) at mid-morning and mid-afternoon on Friday 27 September. They will return to Wellington on Sunday, 29 September.
