Northern Horse Park Trail Run, Chitose, Hokkaido

Malcolm Hodge says he got the Lions singlet dirty in Japan with a second placing at the Northern Horse Park Trail Run in Chitose, Hokkaido. It was a 7km cross-country around an equestrian park. It was a mix of asphalt, dirt, grass and soft sand. It had a slightly interesting format in that there was also a road half marathon, and you could choose to do either or both, where the winner was the person with the best aggregate time. So the winner of Malcolm’s race also did the half, which put him in a different category and made Malcolm the winner of “Trail Only”.

Farewell Stephen Bass

Sadly, former club member Stephen Bass died this week. Stephen Bass was an active member of Wellington Scottish for several years, having arrived here from England with his wife and young family. He returned home in 2021. He competed on the track, road, and cross country in the men’s 35-49 division. He was affable, funny, and approachable, but also fiercely competitive. With his long, slow, loping stride, he never looked like he was moving fast, but he usually was. He regularly posted times of around 17 minutes for the 5k and 35 minutes for 10k, and – as many of us can attest – he was merciless in a race, especially when he sensed you weakening in the middle stages. He was a regular at Karori Park speed sessions and Sunday long runs, and at the social sessions that followed – and was known to many of us as an enthusiastic early adopter of carbon fiber racing shoes, of all brands and models. We are lucky to have had him as a friend and teammate.
