Shirley Barton Trophy and Ballantyne Cup results 2023

Handicapper’s report

It was a great day yesterday for the race for the club’s most prestigious trophy, the Ballantyne Cup, held alongside the Shirley Barton trophy. A 6km, not very flat course in Miramar in fairly nice spring conditions, although the Southerly had picked up a bit by the time we raced, which made the flatter second half of each lap a bit gnarly! 40 people ran, and we had lots of great volunteers too. Great to see Richard “Energiser Bunny” Sweetman join us for the race, on one of his periodic trips back home from Tauranga. And the first appearance at a club race for many years for the “Mysterious JD” Bulbulia!

First on handicap and winner of the Shirley Barton trophy, an excellent 1.48 under her forecast time, was Isla Turner-Holmes, a little way ahead of another relatively new member, Anna Fifield. 3rd on handicap and winner of the Ballantyne Cup, with the fastest time of the day and a course record of 19.07 (39 seconds under handicap), was Dougal Thorburn, already the holder of many records, including the Waitangi Parkrun, and of course, one time world record holder for 10k pushing a pram!

There were a number of other excellent performances, some of which will have put the cat amongst the pigeons for NZRR selections. 8 people ran on or under their handicap, with another 11 within a minute.
