Race report from our club handicapper, James Turner:

“Great turnout and excellent racing yesterday, especially from the women!

Winner on handicap (it was to be fair, a bit of a soft handicap, but she won by so much it would have made no difference to the result) was Dani Stevens, well over 2 mins inside her handicap. Dani wins the esteemed Shirley Barton Cup. Next in line was a close group consisting of Emma Jackson, Bex Hutchinson, Sophie Whelan and Alice Sowry, all well under their handicaps and showing the SW squad at NZRR is in fine fettle.

First male across the line in a time 10 seconds under his (recently toughened!) handicap was Jorge Leonardo Murcia. An excellent 22.35 wins Jorge the Club’s most prestigious trophy in its 100th year of running, the Ballantyne Cup, a few seconds ahead of a “back to his best” Hayden Smith, who dipped under his handicap by 3 seconds.

Fastest runs on the day were Harry McLean in 19.52 ahead of Malcolm Hodge and Stephen Day, while Amy Frankland’s excellent 23.44 held off Sophie W and a “getting stronger every day, so watch out the MW35 opposition (!)” Amanda Broughton.

Final kudos goes to new member Richard Mercier, who had no previous race performance to base a handicap from, and who ran an excellent 32.09, pretty sharp going for a 70+ year-old.

Thanks to the 53 runners (as well as Tricia Sloan and Heather Walker, who ran with Maria W) plus all the helpers and supporters.”
