Auckland Marathon
Despite soggy conditions, there were some great runs from a large Scottish contingent up in Auckland, including Genevieve and Mel finishing 5th and 6th respectively, and Simon running a very impressive 2:49. Emma continued her strong season in the half marathon, and Sophie and Alice had impressive runs in that race too. And Dan won the marathon!
From Athletics NZ: “Daniel Jones made it three Auckland Marathon victories in a row, traversing the Harbour Bridge and the length of Tamaki Drive in steady rain to clock 2:21:52. Jones matched strides with British runner now with Whippets Luke Cotter and Daniel Balchin through halfway in 1:11:42, and the trio were still together at the turn in St Heliers for the run back into the city.”
Marathon: Daniel Jones won in 2.21.56, Simon Keller 2.49.15, Grant McLean 2.54.36, Genevieve Coffey 02:57:3 (5th), Mel Brandon 02:58:36 (6th), Luke Norman 03:00:35, Brad Wong 3.03.47 and Charlie Hulley 3.09.09, Ben Cornelius 03:18:46, Karen Jenkinson 5:06:55, and Caroline Fyfe 05:12:27.

AW – Scottish Twilight Series Meet # 1 – Athletics Wellington
Upcoming Events – Athletics Wellington
Subsequent pre-Xmas events are on Wednesday 23 November and Wednesday 14 December.
These are really fun, low-key events, open to anyone who wants to try out track racing or sharpen up for events such as the Agency 10km or NZ Masters Championships — it would be great to see a good Scottish turnout to support the event.
Without volunteers, these events do not happen — Andy Ford is looking for help on the night with jobs including a starter (training provided!) and finish recorder. Could you let Andy know if you can help at any of the events?
The Agency Group 10000m Festival, 19 November
The Wellington 10,000m Festival is the most popular set of 10,000m races in New Zealand. For the last four years, this has been a night of PBs for athletes of all speeds — 40 percent of athletes finished with a new best time.
We are very excited to announce that in 2022 we will be hosting the Athletics New Zealand 10,000m Championships for men and women across two separate races. Combined with this, are a number of new initiatives to enhance your running experience and create an incredible atmosphere for participants and spectators.
As always, we will host a number of 10,000m races, and all will have packs of many different speeds to drag you to your new PB. Races are open to men and women of all age grades.
Scottish Night of Miles, December 17
The Lifestyle Sports Scottish Night of Miles is a unique event full of Christmas fun that is taking place at Newtown Park on Saturday, 17 December and features races over the rarely run distance of one mile.
Each year we collect donations ($5 suggested) from athletes and spectators then hand them on to a local Wellington charity. 2022’s charity is the Wellington City Mission.
We are also grateful to our event sponsor, Lifestyle Sports, who are a long-standing supporter of Scottish Athletics and one of the premier retailers of running kit within the region.
The programme consists of a mix of children’s, senior elite and fun social events. There are several different mile races, including elite men’s and women’s races and an all-comers mile that anyone can participate in (including Father Christmas).
Further details about entries for the competitive races and the race schedule will be available shortly, but the afternoon will broadly run as follows:
- Doors Open 3pm
- Competitive races from 4pm
- Kids races around 4.30pm
- All-comers race against Santa 5.15pm
- Mile relay 5.30pm
