McVilly Shield

99th year of the McVilly Shield Relay. 18 teams competed this year. It was great to see lots of new people running with the club for the first time – and it’s exciting to see how fast and furious everyone runs when they are running for a team. Congratulations to the winning team of Ben Twyman, Nico Vessiot and Miller Buck. Many thanks to the officials Sharon Wray, Michelle Knight, Bob Stephens, Ray Marten, Alan Stevens, Naomi Richardson and James Richardson.

Waterfront 5km

The Waterfront 5km was back this week and there were PBs for Stephen Clarke, Ali Campbell, Sophie Whelan and Jaime Vessiot.

Coming up

Waterfront 5km Series, Tuesdays

The Wellington Scottish Waterfront 5km continues until 30 March 2021. Please offer to help with registration and marshalling if available.

Centennial Cup, 20 March, Island Bay

Join us for the first official club race of the season. Everyone is welcome, including friends, family and people who want to give the club a try for the first time. This is a flat 5km club race along the south coast waterfront, starting at Island Bay. It is a sealed handicap event where our handicapper has estimated your time over 5km to determine your handicap. Everyone starts together and the finishing times are adjusted by your handicap to determine your net time and the overall winner of the cup.

We are looking for 2 or 3 volunteers to help with marshalling and time keeping. If you can help, please contact Stephen Day.

We meet beforehand at 1:30pm at St Hilda’s Church, 311 The Parade, to store gear. The race starts at 2pm. There is also a J Team race for the kids and race walk for the walkers. Then we return afterwards for an afternoon tea. Current members please bring a small plate of food to share. After the afternoon tea you can join us at Brew’d Island Bay for a drink and a chat.

Last year’s defending Centennial Cup champion is Jasmine Smith.

IAU 6 Hour Virtual Global Solidarity Run, 20 March, Newtown Park

The 2021 edition of the IAU 6 hour Virtual Global Solidarity Run is on the weekend of 20-21 March. Athletics NZ selected three Scottish athletes for the NZ team; Mel Aitken, Emma Bassett and Fiona Hayvice. This is the second edition, with the first being in August 2020 (which was also well represented by Scottish!)

Both Emma and Fiona will be running on the Newtown Track on Saturday 20 March, starting at 6.30am and finishing at 12.30pm. The goal is to run as far as possible in the allotted time. If you’d like to give them a few hollers of encouragement toward the end, please do. It’s on route to the Centennial Cup in Island Bay, the club race that afternoon.

They’ll be sharing the track with the regularly scheduled Athletics Wellington youth events, so please be aware and considerate of our fellow track users.

Wellington 5000m Champs, 27 March

The Wellington 5000m champs will take place on Saturday 27 March late in the afternoon. There will be different races to accommodate runners of all different speeds and goals. New members to the club will be welcome to take part.

Paul Hewitson from WHAC is leading the organisation, and he is looking for a few more helpers. Please let me know if you can assist and I will pass on your offer. Entries will be open later this week. Entry will be $5, which will contribute towards prizes for first place finishers. There will be a BBQ and drinks for sale on the day. This year will include a 70+ age grade category. Entrants must bring someone to count laps for them — one lap counter can count two runners. There will be a at least two races, based on predicted times. Slower runners will start at 4:30 pm. There will be a third event if there are over 30 in each field.

Xterra for the J Team, 28 March, Makara Wind Farm

And there is a special discount for children running with parents. Your child and you (all U16 must be accompanied by an adult) could run/walk Event 1 of the 2021 Xterra Wellington Trail series – set at the Meridian Wind Farm, Makara. The short-course is approximately 6.5km and includes one long climb. The views are worth it! So, if it’s a hot day, it’s wise to carry water and a snack.

Volunteers wanted

We are looking for two new volunteers to help the club. We want a uniform coordinator to order, look after, and distribute our club uniforms. If you’ve got some innovative ideas about our kit, or novel ways we can wear red lions you might be ideal for this role.

We are also looking for a national road relay manager to work with John Gardiner. This person will be coordinating and compiling the teams, working closely with the team captains, liaising with the race directors and officials to help us get a giant team to the startline. Lots of support and advice available for the person who takes this role on.

If you can help with either of these roles or just want to know more, contact Michael Wray.

Keep in touch with the club
