Options for the week

Around the tracks (results)

  • Scottish Night of Miles. Emma Sturmfels won the much-awaited duel with Serena Rudge. Unfortunately, Serena had been sick so there will be a re-match - watch this space… - results, race report and photos
  • James Turner reports on the Taupō Half Ironman: Some spectacular performances by the Scotties on a surprisingly tough day, including golds for Michele Allison (60-64) and Paul Rodway (70-74), silvers for Dean Galt (45-49, in a superb 4hrs 33) and Lucas Du Ross (18-24 in a spectacular 4.24 on debut) and I managed to burgle the bronze in the 55-59s (4.57). Dr Matt “Fast Lane” O'Connor showed that zero training is no barrier to a decent enough half Ironman with 20th in the 30-34s in 5 hrs 12 (although the 1.57 run was undoubtedly painful!). Alistair Collow did his first ever half IM in 6.11 for 40th in the 25-29s. And poor Danielle Trewoon had a great swim and bike but her recent viral infection caught up with her on the run and unfortunately she had to pull the pin without finishing. - Results
  • Scott Ryland reports that Amanda Broughton had a comfortable victory at the Whanganui Three Bridges 1/4 Marathon, by 3-ish minutes, on a very hot Saturday. Bill Twiss also raced the half marathon but had to pull out with a dodgy calf - Results
  • In the Hutt Valley Crazyman duathlon Dougal Thorburn (2.29) took his third win in six years, five minutes clear of the field. Todd Stevens and Mel MacPhee comfortably won the 'Battle of the Stevens' over Peter and his brother Robert in the team duathlon (2.50 to 3.25) Mel ran a very sharp 1.12 over the off-road 13km course. Dougal ran 1.03 and Peter 1.07 - Results
  • Ange Campbell finished the Honolulu Marathon in 5.16.54 as part of her delayed honeymoon - Results
  • Mel Aitken came 8th in a speedy 2.53 in the Guangzhou Marathon (China) in her brand new Scottish singlet.
  • Newtown Juniors and Seniors Track meet. No results available yet.

From the captains

  • Welcome to new club member Shane O Rahilly, who ran an impressive fourth place at the Night of Miles on Saturday, in his first outing for the club.

Upcoming events

Club Meet A and Wellington 10,000m Walk and Run Champs - 15 December

  • Your Scottish club membership gets you free entry to the Saturday afternoon club meets at Newtown Park. You just need to turn up in time to collect your numbered bib from the officials. Although most Scottish members are there for the middle and long distance races there are a range of events you can try including throws jumps and sprints. Everyone of all abilities is welcome to compete in any event.
  • This week is slightly different from normal weeks because it also includes the Wellington 10,000m walk and run championships. To enter one of those two events you need to register by Wednesday night here.
  • There are likely to be a crowd of Scottish athletes, women and men, running the 3000m this Saturday, so come along to join us.

2018-19 Waterfront 5k Summer Series, Tuesdays

  • The Waterfront 5k Summer series runs every Tuesday evening, 5.45pm, from Mac's Brewbar. Come and join us for a post-work fun run on Wellington's amazing inner city waterfront.

Capital Classic - 18 January

  • The Capital Classic, on Friday 18 January is one of New Zealand's premier track and field meetings. It starts at 4.30pm and features a full track and field evening programme. The highlights are the women's and men's 3000m New Zealand Championships. Some of Scottish's top athletes will be competing (you can enter here) but even if you are not competing, do come along to watch.
  • Scottish runners like Anne Hare, Rees Buck, John Henwood, and Hamish Carson have previously won this national title multiple times.

Jumbo Holdsworth Mountain Trail Races - 26 January

  • The Jumbo-Holdsworth Trail Races starts at 8am from the Mt Holdsworth H.Q. carpark, Tararua Forest Park. You can either race the 24 km loop to Mt Jumbo then Mt Holdsworth or you can go in the other direction - Holdsworth, then Jumbo. Or you can do the shorter 12km Hooper Loop. These races form part of the Scottish Summer Series.

Round the Bays - 17 February

  • Round the Bays is the biggest running vent in Wellington with thousands of competitors each year. There are three events to choose from 6.5 km from Frank Kits Park to Kilbirnie Park, 10km or a half marathon. There is always a big turn out of Wellington Scottish singlets and it is an important start to the season and recruitment opportunity for us. Look out for our tent at the finish.

Notices
