The vision

The aims of the league are to reward a consistent performance over the season and help people compare themselves to last year. The intention is to help inspire race performance and hopefully create a bit of friendly competition within age groups. Here is a link to the Scottish League Page‎.

Here’s how it works

For each interclub or handicapped race over the season (10 races in total), you score 10 points for a win in your age category through to 1 point for 10th place.

After races, the updated league table is made available via the newletters and website – last year’s results are also available for comparison.

Points from your best six races make up your score (you still score if you do fewer than six)

At the end of the season, there will be some kind of prizes (this part currently thought-in-progress).

Paid-up club members are automatically entered.

A fine (but chilly) afternoon out on the Kapiti Coast (fine is almost always the case!). Podium results of the relays: Firsts for the senior men’s and masters men’s A teams, first for the senior women’s A team and the third for the SW’s B team. Our senior men also picked up second and third in their grade. Our masters women’s team was second. But there were also good races from runners in all the teams.

Here are the detailed race report and the relay results from the host Victoria University Harriers (Richard Brandon).

Here are photos by Sharon Wray here The University Relays event is a useful practice session for being on time for your relay change. Being in the right place at the right time will be much more crucial in the Takahe to Akaroa road relay in October, and so it is good to get little mishaps out of the way in May, Sierra advises.

The Chocolate Walk started at noon on 6k of the park road. Each entrant walked without a watch and the winner of the chocolate was the person closest to her estimate (a turkey trot). John Leonard had the most accurate estimate (3 seconds adrift), followed by John Ihaka and Geoff Iremonger, second equal. Terri Grimmett was fastest woman (36:35), and best female estimator, while Peter Baillie was fastest man (34:25). Results

The Vosseler Shield dates from 1923 when it was first raced for on a handicap basis over 10 miles. Today, all races start on the grassed area near Badminton Hall on Ruahine St and then head straight up towards the ridge. Courses have bush trail, grass, road and finish on the green, often spongy area above the Badminton Hall. However, there is no parking at the Hall on the day. You are best to try parking by the Wellington Harriers Club (and use their facilities) as that is nearer to where the race finishes anyway.

This is the first event where you must wear your timing chip (which will only have been activated if you have paid your membership fees). As it is an interclub race, you will also need to wear the correct club uniform (yellow Scottish singlet and plain black shorts).

Michael Wray reports: Scottish fielded four running teams (one more than last year) and either two or three walking teams at the Masters Classic XC Relays over a 4k lap.

The open men defended their title to make it three wins in a row. Michael Wray kicked off lap one with the fastest time of the day of 14:24. James Turner (15:55), Warren Maguren (15:28) and Paul Brydges (17:12) all added to the lead leaving Bill Twiss (16:14) to finish the race about three minutes ahead of the next team.

The open women grade was won by Olympic, narrowly defeating a Scottish team made up of Rebecca Speirs (19:21), Maryanne Palmer (23:08), Helen Willis (18:07), Sharon Wray (22:55) and Barbara Morrison (24:53).

Scottish’s “Team Plowman” won the 250 category, in which the sum of the team ages must be at least 250. Jonathon Harper opened with 18:02, followed by John Skinnon in 18:06, Jo Badham 19:04, Steve Plowman 16:40 and Angela Leck 16:07.

The 300 category saw Hutt Valley Harriers just about hold off Scottish for the win in the closest contest of the day. The Scottish 300 team were John Palmer (21:16), Bob Stephens (19:24), Ian Stronach (19:31), Richard Sweetman (19:26) and Glen Wallis (17:10).

We didn’t have a team in the mixed grade, which was won by Trentham.

For the walkers, the open grade saw Peter Baillie, Terri Grimmett and Geoff Iremonger secure the win for Scottish. Similarly the 150 age grade was won for Scottish by Barbara Morrison, Johnny Hines and Daphne Jones.

The event concluded with Trentham walker Jackie Wilson receiving the Wellington Masters Athlete of the year award for 2012.

Registration is from 7.30 am on Sunday morning at the Clubrooms and runners can start from 8 am (walkers can start earlier if they like). You can do 3, 2, or 1 peak and you get to pick any course you like as long as you check in with the marshals at each peak. The only other rule is that you must be finished by noon.. Serious peakers have been known to check out optimal courses ahead of time – now what’s all that about?

The cost is $30 for all three events (bargain) or $12 for each individual event. You can pay on the day or pre-pay by the Thursday before each event online into the Scottish Athletics Club account (38-9005-0501833-00) and use your name as a reference.

We have another great range of sponsored spot prizes up for grabs this year and prizes for the fastest to complete all 3 and 9 peaks. Major sponsors for 2013 are Lifestyle Sports (Dressmart, Tawa) and Ice Breaker.
