The Scottish J Team provides a fun and friendly environment for younger kids to experience running. They get stronger and build endurance, while having fun and making new friends. Club sessions include some running but also lots of games. They are designed to be suitable for a wide range of ages.

How old do I have to be to join?

Our J Team takes children as young as 5 or 6. We do ask that a parent comes along to the first few sessions with a young child, to make sure they settle in and feel comfortable. By the time they reach early teens most of our J Teamers are ready to move into the Junior squad, or in some cases move straight on to running with a senior pack.

Club and interclub events

Club races have a shorter J Team equivalent, often a handicap race so each child has a chance to win. Wellington interclub events have Under 9, Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 categories for both cross country and road racing with the distances increasing as the children get older. Our J Team run in the same distinctive yellow singlets as the adults and get very vocal support from across our friendly club.

J Team Coordinator

The J Team is managed by the very capable Jonathan Harper. Jonathan was coached as a youngster by Olympic marathoner Barry Magee and has many years of running experience.  Jonathan's daughter Ariana is one of Scottish's brightest young stars - a talented middle distance runner - who was coached by Jonathan during those key J Team years. Jonathan now uses that accumulated knowledge to coach and inspire young athletes of all ages and abilities.
