Another of Daryl Bloomfield's innovations in Scorching Bay. Three triathlons in a row, each about a third of a sprint triathlon (250m swim/6.5k bike/1.5k run), run on the hour. Then the top 20 or so (a few wild cards thrown into the mix) were put through the course with handicaps based on the performance in the three "heats." The weather was less than ideal and the numbers in attendance sadly reflected the conditions and the closeness to the holidays.
The grand finale was a great spectacle with gaps compressing on the finish line. Winning the $1k prize money was Dana Purdy of Palmerston North. Scottish presence in the GF: Tony Wolken was 5th in 27:41; Tricia Sloan 8th 28:12; and Becky Hawthorne 19th 28:55. In the heats (aggregate time over the three heats): Tony Wolken 1:10; Tom McCallum 1:12; Andy Ford 1:15; Jane Loughnan 1:19; Becky Hawthorne 1:21; Paul Rodway 1:25; Tricia Sloan,1:26: Karen Ward 1:28; Ian Stronach 1:33; Ryan Brydges 1:38. http://results.scorching.co.nz/detail/?rid=587 Merry Christmas all, and a safe holiday.
