Lifestyle Sports Waterfront 5k Fun Run and Walk Series, August 2010 - April 2011

Lifestyle Sports Waterfront 5k Fun Run and Walk Series, Chicago Bar, 7 September 2010 A new course record! Hamish Carson, the current NZ 1500m champion, broke his own course record with an outstanding time of 14min 45sec in tonight's 6th Lifestyle Sports Waterfront 5k. For breaking the record, Hamish collected a $250 cash bonus prize. Stefan Smith, the current Wellington road and cross country champion, set a fast pace from the beginning, building up a sizeable lead. However, Hamish's renowned finishing speed saw him catch Stefan close to the finish, for a 3sec victory. Stefan was very disappointed to lose, as is the case with competitive runners. His disappointment added to the disappointment arising from the cancellation (due to the earthquake) of the NZ road championships which were meant to be held in Christchurch last Saturday. Hayden Shearman finished 3rd, with a sharp time of 15min 32sec.

Tina Harris was the fastest women with an excellent time of 16min 58sec, partly making up for her disappointment at missing the NZ road championships. Gabby O'Rourke (17.34) and Stephanie Mackenzie (17.52) had great runs for 2nd and 3rd.

Tim Dutton (28min 29sec) and Terri Grimmett (31min 51sec) won the walking races for a remarkable 6th straight time.

Overall 164 keen runners and walkers fronted, a record turnout for this series, close to our all time record of 177. Tonight's weather was almost perfect, with clear sky and light winds). If this great weather continues, then breaking the record of 177 is a real possibility.

With a number of Wellington's faster runners turning up tonight, the merit prizes are likely to be closely contested. The three males and three females with the lowest aggregate times over their best four performances over the first 10 weeks of the series (3 August to 5 October) will win cash prizes (First $300, Second $150, Third $50).

A big thanks to our sponsors - in particular Lifestyle Sports for the weekly gift voucher and Chicago Sports Cafe for the free drink afterwards and bar tabs as spot prizes. Lifestyle has a very extensive range of running shoes. If you can't get to the shop in Tawa, send Manager Karen an email. She would be more than happy to answer your questions or source a pair of your favourite shoes.

To encourage participation there will be a competition which will reward the people that complete the most races in the 15 weeks from 14 September 2010 to 21 December 2010. We look forward to seeing you all back again in the coming weeks. Spread the word around your friends and workmates. Issue a few challenges and then enjoy some post race analysis over a beer.

If you spot any errors with our results, please email Todd Stevens. Results

Key information

Calling all social or competitive runners and walkers: Come on down to Chicago Sports Café at Queens Wharf every Tuesday evening from 3 August for our Wellington Waterfront 5k fun run and walk series. With great sponsors, a popular format, and fantastic prizes, the Lifestyle Sports Waterfront 5k series will start on Tuesday, 3 August 2010 and run weekly thereafter until April 2011. This is a significant opportunity for any runner or walker to get fit in preparation for summer (yes, summer is coming, we hope!).

Who can compete? Any social or competitive joggers, runners, and walkers. Last year we regularly had over 150 competitors each week in August and September, and this year we want to see even more people out testing themselves over 5km.

Start times  Runners with an expected time of under 25min for 5k start at 5.45pm , while other runners and walkers start at 5:30pm .

Registration  Enter from 5pm to 5:40pm inside Chicago Sports Café, Queens Wharf (only 50 metres from the start / finish). The registration desk will be easy to see. You can leave your bags with race officials there.  When you first compete in the 2010/11 series, you will complete and sign the registration form, and be allocated a race number (which will be written on your hand). You will keep the same race number for the rest of the series (but you will still need to come to the registration desk each week to pay your $7 and have your race number written on your hand).

Entry fee  Only $7. This includes a FREE drink from Chicago Sports Café of Chicago draft tap beer, juice or fizzy drink after the race.

Prize-giving  A short (5min) prizegiving will be held directly after the race (approx 6:20pm ) inside Chicago Sports Cafe.

Prizes  Thanks to our generous sponsors, there will be lots of spot prizes. Weekly prizes include gift vouchers and products from Lifestyle Sports and Chicago Sports Café.

There will also be prizes to encourage participation. For example, keep an eye out for details of the competition which will reward the people that complete the most races in the 15 weeks from 14 September 2010 to 21 December 2010. And there will be an (edible!) prize for anyone doing all of the first 3 races in the series.

Merit prizes  As an encouragement to the region’s top athletes, the Wellington Scottish Supporters Trust has generously put up $1,000 in cash merit prizes. The 3 males and 3 females with the lowest aggregate times over their best 4 performances over the first 10 weeks of the series (3 August to 5 October) will win cash prizes. First $300, Second $150, Third $50.

Course records  The course records are currently held by Hamish Carson, the 2010 NZ 1500m champion (14min 51sec) and Kate McIlroy, Commonwealth Games runner and now International triathlete (16min 26sec). The first male and female to break the course record for their gender will receive a cash bonus of $250.  Each subsequent record during the series will result in a $50 bonus.

Route  Start and finish is at Fergs Kayaks at Queens Wharf and is an out and back course. From Fergs Kayaks head out towards Oriental Parade, hugging the Wharf, past Te Papa on the seaward side, then head along pathway towards Cable Street and around Waitangi Park by New World supermarket. Head northwards along Oriental Parade, passing Freyberg Pool. Continue until turnaround point approximately 50m short of Carlton Gore Road (indicated by a race official and fluorescent cone). Run/walk back the same route.  When you cross the finish line please proceed down the finish chute and stay in your finishing order until our recorders have written down your race number from your hand.

Take care!  The course is not closed for our race. We share the course with others. Please be alert and courteous. Dangers include:  pedestrians (particularly when the weather is fine), cyclists, a road crossing at the entrance to the Overseas Terminal, cars coming in and out of the Freyberg Pool carpark.

Results  All results will be posted on the Wellington Scottish website as soon as possible after the race (generally a few hours after the race).

Contact  Please contact Andrena for further information.

Sponsors  The Lifestyle Sports Waterfront 5k Fun Run and Walk Series is hosted and organised by Wellington Scottish Athletics Club.  We are very fortunate to have significant sponsors on board including Lifestyle Sports and Chicago Sports Café.

Results  All results will be posted on our website as soon as possible after the race.

The popular Loaded Hog 5k "Summer" Series began its weekly version on Tuesday, 9 October and winds up on 26 February for a dozen races in total. From mid-November the frequency drops back to fortnightly and the alternate weeks filled in with the Olympic Twilight 5k series.  Registration opens at around 5:30 at the waterfront Loaded Hog. Entry fee of $6 gets you a race to compete in, a complimentary Loaded Hog beverage at the prize-giving in the bar, a chance to pick up a spot prize and share some scintillating conversation. Walkers start at 5:45, runners at 6:00. The start is beside Ferg's Kayaks and the course heads out past Te Papa, down to Cable St, past the New World, around to Oriental Parade footpath to the cone (near the bus stop, about 200m beyond the end of the beach) and returns the same way. When you cross the finish line, please stay in finishing order until we record your number. Toilets are available on the wharf or in the Loaded Hog. This is a great chance to do regular racing, time trials, or tempo runs. You may want to put up the following poster in your workplace, gym, etc. Poster with details

History of the 5k series

We began these 5k series in the spring of 2000 (August and September), with a double loop course around Thorndon.  In those days the name sponsor was Magills (a now defunct pub on Thorndon Quay).  The idea of the spring series was to get people ready for road racing (such as the road relays).  This course required lots of marshalls because of all the road crossings.  In the autumn, we changed to course to a single out-and-back along the Old Hutt Road - no road crossings.  The idea of the timing was to get people endurance-fit for winter sports (including harriers!).

That's the way it stayed for several years, except we moved the start out to the end of the retail area (beside the paint shop) to provide a wider footpath with fewer vehicles crossing.

After Magills folded, Bodyworks took up the name sponsorship for a season. In Autumn 2005, we moved to the waterfront and a new name sponsor (Lifestyle Sports, who remain as a sponsor) with a course around the Overseas Passenger Terminal and out to Oriental Bay and straight back, starting from the brewery on Taranaki Wharf.  Then in August 2005, we began a longer Spring series under the name sponsorship of the Loaded Hog, an out-and-back course to the end of Oriental Bay starting from outside the kayak and climbing store. The Loaded Hog also provided a congenial location after the race to hold a prize giving and relax while rehydrating.
